Block 4 · Grammar notes

Telling the Time in Greek

Two notes that apply to every card in this block. Read them before you start the exercise.

Note 1

στις vs στη

Before every hour except one, Greek uses στις (plural). Only 1:00 takes στη μία (singular).

  • στις δύο — at two o'clock
  • στις δέκα — at ten o'clock
  • στη μία — at one o'clock

Trap: in quizzes about 1:00, στις μία is the classic mistake.

Note 2

12-hour clock in speech

Written time is 24-hour (17:00), but in conversation Greeks say the 12-hour hour. 17:00 is spoken as στις πέντε (at five).

  • στις πέντε — 17:00 in speech
  • δεκαεπτά — written-style, not said aloud

This point is practised in Exercise 13 below.

Block 4 · Exercise 13

This is the sign on the Greek Innovations office door. Choose the correct Greek reading for each time. Careful: in everyday speech Greeks use the 12-hour clock.

What’s wrong here? How do we fix it?

Which gender does the day number take?

      Correct

      στις είκοσι τρεις Απριλίου

      Why

The number agrees with ημέρα (feminine), so τρεις, not τρία.

Rule: In dates, the day number is feminine.

      Trap 2 · Month Case

      στις πέντε Μάιος

What’s wrong here? How do we fix it?

      Correct

      στις πέντε Μαΐου

      Why
